At the beginning of season 2, Supergirl brought the Man of Steel to the mall screen and to the surprise of many, Tyler Hoechlin’s portrayal of Superman won over an abundance of fans. Of course this begs the question: will we see a spinoff Superman series? CW’s president Mark Pedowitz sat wth Entertainment Weekly to discuss this.
“Tyler did a great job. There’s no plan to do a series. There are no plans at the moment for him to return [to ‘Supergirl’]. If they wish to have him return, we’d love to have him. I can’t even answer the question yet because at this time there are no plans to do it and there have been no discussions about it.”
This is a bit disappointing for those who were fans of his incarnation of the Son of Krypton, but it is easy to see why this would be difficult. Seeing as Henry Cavil’s Superman plays such a pivotal role in the DCEU, there could be too much competition between the Kal Els if Hoechlin were to get his own spinoff show. However, Greg Berlanti seems to be for the project, should that discussion ever occur with the studio.
“Look, we were just really lucky. We asked to have him come on for the first couple episodes and they were great about it. We’d love to have Tyler back, he’s amazing, he was great in the role. In success, I think all those things are possible. I’m always the guy who says ‘yes’ if there seems to be an appetite for it and the people involved are really nice.”
Perhaps a Superman series could end up rearing its head somewhere down the line. For now, we’ll have to be held over with the existing CW DC television shows, which return the week of January 23rd.
