The force is strong with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The first stand alone Star Wars movie has taken in $15 million on Christmas Eve on it’s six-day run of December 21-26. It is estimated the movie will make a total of $120 million in total for these six days. After Monday the overall domestic box office will shoot up to $327 million, shooting past Suicide Squad making it the eighth highest domestic grossing movie of the year.
Coming in second for the holiday weekend is Illumination and Universal’s animated kids movie Sing which pulled in $7.9 million. Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence’s science fiction movie Passengers came in next with only $2.9 million. Followed by Fox’s adaptation of the video game Assassin’s Creed with $2.2 million. The James Franco and Bryan Cranston comedy Why Him? tied with Disney’s Moana with $1.8 million.
Rogue One stars Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso, and is about a group of rebels that makes a desperate attempt to steal the plans to the Death Star. Being the eighth movie in the Star Wars franchise, Rogue One is only %42 behind last years The Force Awakens which made $571 million within it’s first 11 days. And then went on to make $936.6 million total domestic gross.
