15 Films To See In 2017

Christmas is indeed the most wonderful time of the year. Not just because of family, gifts, warm fires, and a Star Wars movie from now until the universe collapses. It’s time we can look back at the year and discuss our favorites films that released, special moments in the cinema, and predict award season at the Oscars. But more than that  it’s because it means a new year slatted with films is just around the corner. Here I compiled a list of 15 films you can look forward to in 2017. Be it big blockbuster to indie films I made a list just for you. The great thing about this list is that it could big larger. There are so many more to release and I’m sure some will surprise us. This is the first list of two which I will release soon. But lets start taking a look at the list and marking those calendars folks.

1. “Patriots Day”

Director: Peter Berg

Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Melissa Bonoist

Synopsis: An account of Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis’s actions in the events leading up to the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and the aftermath, which includes the city-wide manhunt to find the terrorists behind it.

What worried me about this film was how quickly Hollywood jumped into developing this so soon after the event occurred in 2013. A lot like hearing them making a Jumanji sequel soon after the passing of the great Robin Williams I get very upset. But after hearing good positive buzz from early screeners it feels like this film just may end up being very good as well as giving a visual to those of us who were not there on that day.

2. “Live By Night”

Director: Ben Affleck

Cast: Ben Affleck, Zoe Saldana, Chris Sullivan

Synopsis: A story set in the Prohibition Era and centered around a group of individuals and their dealings in the world of organized crime.

Apart from the intriguing trailer to get me to buy a ticket. Ben Affleck has not directed one bad movie to date and this being his follow up to Oscars Best Picture “Argo” has many talking about its chances at winning some awards. I have been following the production of this film since its announcement and knowing Affleck track record at giving us quality I’m sure we won’t be disappointed.

3. “The Lego Batman Movie”

Director: Chris McKay

Cast: Will Arnett, Billy Dee Williams, Zach Galifinakis, Michael Cera, Jenny Slate

Synopsis:Bruce Wayne must not only deal with the criminals of Gotham City, but also the responsibility of raising a boy he adopted.

This movie has me so excited simply based on the fact that “The Lego Movie” became one of my favorite animated films of the decade. Will Arnett as the voice of Batman I think surprised most of us and his comedic timing and quirkiness made me fall in love with this animated lego world (a movie of legos, what a concept) and I’m hoping this movie delivers on laughs and fun as much as its predecessor.

4.  “John Wick: Chapter 2”

Director: Chad Stahelski

Cast: Keanu Reeves, Ruby Rose, Lawrence Fishburn

Synopsis: John Wick is forced out of retirement by a former associate looking to seize control of a shadowy international assassins’ guild Bound by a blood oath to aid him, Wick travels to Rome and does battle against some of the world’s most dangerous killers.

Hell yes. “John Wick” was one of the best surprises from Keanu Reeves back in 2014 and a sequel is a must have. From the motivation of the character, to the badass action, all the way to the fun world that Chad Stahelski and David Leitch built. “John Wick:Chatper 2” should be near top of your list.

Release Date: February 10, 2017

5. “Logan”

Director: James Mangold

Cast: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Boyd Holbrook

Synopsis: Set in the future, Logan and Professor Charles Xavier must cope with the loss of the X-Men when a corporation led by Nathaniel Essex is destroying the world leaving it to destruction, with Logan’s healing abilities slowly fading away and Xavier’s Alzheimer’s forcing him to forget. Logan must defeat Nathaniel Essex with the help of a young girl named Laura Kinney, a female clone of Wolverine.

If theres was an award for “Best Trailer of 2016” hands down would “Logan” be given this award. I think a lot of us (including me) were thinking we were gonna get our last Wolverine movie that would be similar the ones before. But according to this trailer that doesn’t seem the case. If you haven’t already watch this trailer (link below) and see what the talk is all about.

6. “Kong: Skull Island”

Director: Jordan Vogt-Roberts

Cast: Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Toby Kebbell

Synopsis: Explore the mysterious and dangerous home of the king of the apes as a team of explorers ventures deep inside the treacherous, primordial island.

All hail the King! The king of the jungle is back next year and he’s grown quit a bit since you last saw him. With this new reboot of the King Kong I was stunned to see how huge this guy is. But to my surprise it was because Warner Bros. is already setting up a “Godzilla vs Kong” movie down the road. Needless to say, I enjoyed Peter Jacksons 2005 version of the Kong but this new reboot looks like it may be my new favorite.

Release Date: March 10, 2017

7. “Beauty And The Beast”

Director: Bill Condon

Cast: Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans

Synopsis: An adaptation of the Disney fairy-tale about a monstrous prince and a young woman who fall in love.

With Disney rolling out live-action remakes of their cartoon classics the time has come for one of their best. “Beauty And The Beast” is still to this day one of the best 2d animated films of all time. With the cast filled with talent and a strong studio behind it could this film top this years Jungle Book? It will for sure make loads of money at the box office but lets hope Disney is able to capture the same magic from the original and blow us away once again.

Release Date: March 17, 2017

8.“Life”

Director: Daniel Espinosa

Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Furguson

Synopsis: An international space crew discovers life on Mars.

While not a whole lot is known about this movie besides what we know in the synopsis and trailer what really sells me on this film is the cast. We have Deadpool himself star Ryan Reynolds, with breakout star from the latest Mission-Impossible the lovely Rebecca Ferguson, and led by one of my favorite actors Jake Gyllenhaal. While I’m not sure how much to anticipate from this film I am hoping it brings something new to the sic-fi genre.

Release Date: March 24, 2017

9. “Power Rangers”

Director: Dean Israelite

Cast: Elizabeth Banks, Bryan Cranston, Bill Hader

Synopsis: A group of high-school kids, who are infused with unique superpowers, harness their abilities in order to save the world.

Go go! That cheesy action show feature high schoolers is getting a movie adaptation yet again and it comes out soon. When this was first announced, like most of you, I rolled my eyes so hard. But I gotta say the trailer has me just a little  but intrigued. Not to see the story, the characters, the villain, but really to see how they do this. Because the tone the trailers put out is a more serious one that doesn’t get as carried away as they do in the shows. Also, I am curious to see the action. Really to see if its any good. I want to see what they will change from the shows and previous movie to successfully reboot this brand.

Release Date: March 24, 2017

10. “Ghost In The Shell”

Director: Rupert Sanders

Cast: Scarlett Johanson, Michael Wincott, Michael Pitt

Synopsis: A cyborg policewoman attempts to bring down a nefarious computer hacker.

Although being based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property the production of this film has caught some heat with casting Johansson. That aside, many fans of the property and those unfamiliar may be surprised to find a very dark and beautiful looking trailer released not long ago. While being adapted for a mainstream audience I hope this version can still please fans and make many (like me) along the way.

Release Date: March 31, 2017

11. “The Fate Of The Furious”

Director: F. Gary Gray

Cast: Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Charlize Theron

Synopsis: When a mysterious woman seduces Dom into the world of crime and a betrayal of those closest to him, the crew face trials that will test them as never before.

Ever since the fifth installment in this franchise it seems that the risk keep getting bigger and the dumb fun never ends. The team is still on the move and the recent trailer not only gave us a ridiculous title but also a different stake at hand. With Dom running around playing big baddie the first trailer left Fast fans scratching their heads wondering how this could be after all the preaching about “family”. None the less, things are kicking off into high gear with the action and soon we will be eight films deep into this blockbuster franchise.

Release Date: April 14, 2017

12. “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2”

Director: James Gunn

Cast: Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper

Synopsis:Set to the backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ continues the team’s adventures as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s true parentage.

Most of us were pleasantly surprised at Marvels gamble with “Guardians Of The Galaxy”. From the characters, the humor, the chemistry they all shared, and of course, dancing Groot. The long wait for this intergalactic sequel is almost over. The first trailer is actually a very well put together trailer. It gets your attention, gets you excited, and most important rule of all it doesn’t spoil all the great moments the film will hold. Time to start jamming to those old tunes of Vol 1 as we wait for May to come. We are Groot.

Released Date: May 5, 2017

13. “Alien: Covenant”

Director: Ridley Scott

Cast: Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterson, James Franco

Synopsis: The crew of the colony ship Covenant discover what they think is an uncharted paradise, but it is actually a dark, dangerous world, whose sole inhabitant is the synthetic David, survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

A sequel to 2012’s “Prometheus” this story follows a few of the same characters with a new crew. We will for sure see more aliens given the title and lets hope Ridley Scott can deliver on the same quality as he has in the past.  As a huge fan of all the Alien films this one rises near the top 5 of most anticipated for the year.

Release Date: May 19, 2017

14. “Wonder Woman”

Director: Patty Jenkins

Cast: Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright

Synopsis: An Amazon princess leaves her island home to explore the world and, in doing so, becomes one of the world’s greatest heroes.

With her debut in “Batman v Superman” we now get a stand alone film with Gal Gadot as the Amazon princess. Although the recent films of the DCEU haven’t been the critical and in some sense box office success the studio was expecting. It is still good to see them move forward with confidence in a female led super hero picture. Especially since we have never had her on the big screen leading her own film. It will be fun to see her in this then again in Zack Snyders “Justice League” in the fall. But let’s hope Patty Jenkins and studio do the princess warrior justice on the big screen for the very first time.

Release Date: June 2, 2017

15. “The Mummy”

Director: Alex Kurtzman

Cast: Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Annabella Wallis

Synopsis: An ancient princess is awakened from her crypt beneath the desert, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia, and terrors that defy human comprehension.

With Universal pushing their monster reboot forward this movie caught alot of film fans attention when they cast action star Tom Cruise and later added “Kingsman: The Secret Service” breakout star Sofia Boutella. While there may be some stink let over from the last installment of the mummy franchise I am so pumped to see movie and hoping for a fun action thriller. Don’t forget Russell Crowe making an appliance as Dr. Henry Jeykll (who assuming if this movie is a success will get his own film.) Check out the trailer below which was recently released.
