Forest Whitaker Discusses Working On ‘Black Panther’ With Ryan Coogler

As Rogue One thrives during its first week in theaters profiting millions of dollars, one of the stars of the film in Forest Whitaker recently discussed his further involvement with Disney following the success of his first Star Wars performance. After the Oscar-winning actor completed filming his scenes as Saw Guerrera with Disney for Rogue One, it was later announced he would star alongside Chadwick Boseman for Disney’s upcoming Black Panther solo film. Black Panther, under the direction of Ryan Coogler, will be the first film in which Forest Whitaker will act for Coogler. However, this is not the first time the two stars have worked together. In 2013 Whitaker served as a producer for Fruitvale Station, one of Coogler’s most notable directorial films which also happened to star Michael B. Jordan, another Black Panther actor.

During a recent interview with the Empire Film Podcast promoting Rogue One, Whitaker was asked about his opportunity to work with Ryan Coogler soon, to which he replied:

“I’m excited to do it. I mean, I think Ryan’s an amazing filmmaker. I have got a chance to know him since college, so I’m excited to see what it is like to be working with him on the other side, not as a producer, but as an actor because that is how we started with Fruitvale Station.”

Following the massive success of T’Challa’s introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe during the events of Captain America: Civil War earlier this year, anticipation for the upcoming Black Panther film is very high. Unfortunately, considering the film still has shortly over a year until its release there have been little-to-no details revealed to the public yet concerning the film’s plot, character details, etc. However, during the same podcast Whitaker was asked about his Black Panther character, Zuri, to which he gave this brief description:

“He is like the Shaman of this community [and] to the prince.”

Unfortunately, there is not much to take from this description so Black Panther fans will have to wait longer to learn more about Whitaker’s character. As we enter the new year and the Black Panther begins filming fans can look forward to more information regarding the film to be released to the public.

Forest Whitaker will appear alongside Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, and more stars in Black Panther, which will arrive in theaters on February 16th, 2018.
