It seems as though fan’s reaction to last night’s trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming instilled quite a bit of confidence in Sony and Marvel that their next solo outing for the web-slinger will do well. The trailer blew everyone away and now according to Deadline, a sequel to the film has an official release date. The report from Deadline is as follows…
Based on the success of the global trailer launch yesterday for Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, the Culver City studio has announced that its sequel Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 will open on Friday, July 5, 2019.
Keep in mind that this has NOT been officially confirmed by Marvel, Sony or Tom Holland. Let’s assume for a second that this is true. It’s not the first time this year that a movie studio has announced sequels before the first movie hits theatres. Warner Brothers and Fox have announced sequels to Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them and Deadpool respectively before the initial movies hit theatres.
We know that Tom Holland is officially contracted for 3 solo ‘Spider-Man’ movies and 3 appearances in Marvel movies (such as Captain America: Civil War) so he still has two solo movies to go in his current contract and 2 years is about the right time for a sequel. Given the popularity of the new take on the character, most fans will be very excited to hear the potential announcement of a sequel already.
It seems as though Sony and Marvel have a lot of confidence that Spider-Man: Homecoming will do well. If the trailer is any indication of the quality of the movie then we share Marvel and Sony’s opinion that the movie will be great. Keep in mind that a great trailer does not always lead to a great movie but Tom Holland’s perfect portrayal of the role coupled with the addition of other MCU characters such as Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark fully suited up in Iron Man armour has all the pieces for another great comic book movie!
