‘Arrow’ Showrunner Teases Shocking Midseason Finale Ending

Arrow has, so far, had a great fifth season. Many worried (especially following the disastrous season four) that Arrow would never get back on track, but it has. The fifth season has demonstrated that the showrunners have learned from their mistakes and are playing on the show’s strengths to make the highest quality episodes they can.

Following a powerful 100th episode, Arrow is about to hit its 101st, which also happens to be the midseason finale. On the topic of the episode, titled What We Leave Behind, showrunner Greg Berlanti had this to say:

“There’s a shocking end of the winter [finale] moment for Oliver.”

Concerning what the episode’s flashbacks would deal with, Berlanti said this:

“There’s an idea that carried over from the 100th episode into the 101st. The flashbacks will be actually flashbacks to season 1… One of the things I wanted to do originally was flashback to season 1 in the 100th episode. Very quickly we realized that we were telling far too much story for the 100th episode and there simply wasn’t any room for that idea. We get to nod a little bit to our 100th episode legacy in our midseason finale.”

It is clear that the showrunners are taking Arrow’s storied history seriously. Even with an incredible homage to the first four seasons of the show in the last episode, Berlanti states that the showrunners still have plenty of story to tell. In addition, the fact that Arrow will flashback to an earlier season is completely new and exciting- an episode’s flashbacks have always taken place before season one. Perhaps season one’s brutal, violent Oliver Queen will be juxtaposed with the current Oliver, who has recently started to kill again.

The knowledge that there is a shocking end to the episode is, well, not a shock. For as long as they have been on the air, the CW superhero shows have always ended their midseason on a big reveal. Still, with the mystery of Prometheus’ identity still haunting the team, there is lot to be excited for in What We Leave Behind.
