While superhero movies are nearly guaranteed to be cinematic blockbusters, the latest installment in the ever-growing Star Wars saga, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, seems to be right on track to make box office history, much like its predecessor Star Wars: The Force Awakens did when it was released in 2015.
Even with only a few weeks left in the year, it’s not too late for this chapter of the space opera to break records before it’s even released in theaters.
According to www.movietickets.com, Rogue One is actually leading in presale tickets for 2016. Tickets went on sale on Monday and immediately ticketing websites reported the need to create virtual waiting rooms to try to keep servers from crashing. Fandango stated that Rogue One was second highest in pre-ticket sales; the number one spot still held by The Force Awakens.
The film is expected to open at around $130 million and could very well be one of the highest-grossing openings in December.
