When casting for Spider-Man: Homecoming started getting out, it was reported that Zendaya would be playing a character initially identified as Michelle. Many believed this to be a cover for Mary Jane, as the actress had been the only female casted in a similar age group to Tom Holland, which would make her a reasonable choice for the iconic love interest. Whether you were for or agains this casting, Zendaya has come out and said that she won’t be playing MJ during an interview with Entertainment Tonight:
“I’m not Mary Jane unfortunately, but I am in the movie which is exciting.”
While she says this and insists her character’s name is in fact Michelle, she gives an exaggerated wink to the camera, which kind of throws off the viewer. However, she does go on to flesh out this Michelle character a bit for us:
“My character is not romantic, my character is like very dry, awkward, intellectual and because she’s so smart, she just feels like she doesn’t need to talk to people, like ‘My brain is so far ahead of you that you’re just not really on my level.’ So she comes off very weird. But to me, she is very cool because she’s deep. She’s always thinking about something, always reading. I like that.”
While not revealing much about the character, this seems to be too deep of a description to make up just for the sake of throwing fans off the scent. But who knows, so be sure to stay tuned for updates!
