‘Rogue One’ Tracking For Big Opening Weekend

The anticipation can’t be higher for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, with early tracking stating it can earn up to $130 million domestically in its first weekend.  According to Hollywood Reporter, this movie has been stated as one of the biggest box-office curiosities. The reason for that is because while this is a new Star Wars film, it is the first of the stand alone films that is not part of the main continuity. Other box-office tracking services claim this movie could reach up to $150 million.

The Force Awakens opened to $248 million domestically last year, making it the biggest U.S. opening of all time. It then went to gross over $900 million domestically, and $2.07 billion for its worldwide total. The Force Awakens is the third highest grossing movie of all time, only being behind Avatar and Titanic.

Disney is managing their expectations, and are not expecting for this movie to do The Force Awakens numbers. Walt Disney Co. chairman Bob Iger said this:

“Yes, the marketing material that we’ve had out has been extremely well received. We’ve not ever felt it would do the level that Force Awakens did, but we’ve been very, very encouraged that the level of interest in this is as high as it was for Force Awakens.”

If Rogue One lives up to expectations, it could set a new industry record for Disney, which is earning over $7 billion in global ticket sales. If this movie is good, it’ll most likely be close to the numbers of  The Force Awaken

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is directed by Gareth Edwards, and it will be released Dec. 16 in theaters. Disney has three stand-alone Star Wars films planned, with Han Solo: A Star Wars Story in 2018, and a to be announced one in 2020.
