Scott Derrickson Initially Wanted Nightmare To Appear As The Villain In ‘Doctor Strange’

SPOILERS for Doctor Strange follow below.

Doctor Strange has been out for about a week now, and fans have been raving. Many anticipated seeing Dormammu, and welcomed his presence in the film warmly. However, Derrickson recently revealed in an interview with Empire that he initially wanted Nightmare to appear, but Kevin Feige objected.

“Kevin [Feige] made a very cogent case. The trouble with starting with Nightmare is getting across the idea of the Dream Dimension as another dimension. The movie was challenging enough. It’s already an exposition-heavy movie…Dormammu made the most sense. And he is the most present villain in the comics.”

If you know nothing about Doctor Strange, then the movie that made it to theaters could’ve been a bit confusing on its own, so it’s not a big surprise that Feige wouldn’t want to include a villain that would make the plot that much more confusing. Nightmare is a character who draws power from people who are unconscious during sleep, and dwells in the dream dimension. While Strange did travel to the dark dimension to bargain with Dormammu, that realm was enveloping reality and was a bit easier to follow than it would be to follow a plot constantly shifting between reality and dreams. However, now that the Doctor Strange mythos has been introduced to the MCU and people are more familiar with the character, perhaps the dream dimension can be entered in future films.

What do you guys think? Would you like to have seen Nightmare instead of Kaecilius/ Dormammu? Do you want to see him at all in the MCU? Let us know in the comments as well as on our Twitter and Instagram!
