Kevin Feige Talks Recasting Iron Man & Captain America In The MCU

Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans do an outstanding job in their respective roles as Tony Stark/Iron Man and Steve Rogers/Captain America. One of the biggest things on fans minds regarding these actors is when they will portray their characters for the last time. RDJ had to go through renegotiations with Marvel after Iron Man 3 because his original contract only included 4 movies. Chris Evans mentioned a while ago that he would only be acting in a Marvel film or in something he directs.

Kevin Feige spoke with Toronto Sun about this exact issue, to which Feige replied with the following…

“I think it could be either one. These characters have been around for 50-plus years, and have been relatively ageless. Sometimes there are alternate stories where the character is younger than they usually are, or older, but they usually maintain a certain age. I think most of these characters that are iconic, like (James) Bond, like Batman, like Spider-Man, like Iron Man, someday will be portrayed by different actors. The good news right now is I don’t have to think about that for a long time. We have storylines for this cast for many years to come.”

The last line in Feige’s comments is obviously the most interesting. We know that Chris and RDJ are shooting Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 over 9 months starting in a couple of months. Avengers 4 doesn’t hit theatres until 2019 so if you count 3 years as “many years” then that explains his comments. Chris Evans has recently stated that if Marvel wants him to return as ‘Captain America’ then he is ready. If Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War are any indication, a ‘Captain America 4’ will probably make around the $1bn mark and Marvel aren’t stupid enough to pass on the opportunity of $1bn.

As for RDJ, he has said that if he plays a smaller role in the movies then he might be able to push out a few more films. Which explains why he was in Captain America: Civil War and why he will be in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

It’s going to be a sad day when these two actors play their characters for the last time but until then we will see RDJ and Chris Evans don their suits again in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4.

Avengers: Infinity War hits theatres on May 4th, 2018 and the currently untitled ‘Avengers 4’ hits theatres on May 4th, 2019!
