Last season, we saw the peak and eventual end of Oliver and Felicity’s relationship in Arrow, with Felicity breaking up with him. This has split the show’s audience, some loving the split, some hating it. The writers seem keen on making sure that the pair stay as friends, at least for the moment, as they have been working together, with little to no mention of their romantic relationship. Stephen Amell, who plays the hooded vigilante, was recently asked about it, and responded, talking about whether Oliver can move on from Felicity.
“I don’t know if he’s ready to move on, but it’s time for Oliver to have another relationship. We actually had a moment earlier this year, I was talking with [Executive Producer] Wendy Mericle; I said, ‘Currently, we’re not allowed to say playboy. He has dated one woman since Season 2 and you know– he had a fling with Isabel Rochev. That’s it. Stop writing playboy. If you’d like him to be a playboy, then by all means, start writing him as one and then we can do it.’
I’ve had a couple of scenes with Carly [Pope] who has done a great job as Susan Williams. And I do think there will be some exploration of a certain element of romance between the two of them. I hope that people will enjoy it because I’ve found it to be really dynamic so far.”
I honestly love that Amell seems to be okay with the split, and ready to have his character move on from a relationship that some believe had stagnated the vigilante’s arc in the show. This season has been amazing so far, and while that’s not just because of Felicity no longer being romantically tethered to Oliver, it has certainly helped. What do you think? Do you believe that the split has helped the flow and dynamic of the show? Are you looking forward to seeing Oliver move on from Felicity, and maybe be a ‘playboy’?
