One of the most unexpected yet unsung heroes in film history has quickly made her (!) way to the top of every Star Wars fan wishlist after an impressive performance in her debut. The hero in question, Rey (portrayed by Daisy Ridley), was an abandoned child on Jakku and found her way into The Force. The movie concluded with her finding one of the most legendary Jedi to date, Luke Skywalker. As always, fans speculate while waiting for the new installment of their favorite franchise and Daisy has been a central topic in each of their own respective speculations. One of the most discussed topics when it comes to Daisy’s characters are her roots. More importantly, her parentage. It’s not known yet whether Rey’s parents (or parent) is someone that has showed up in previous movies or is just a random character with no significant backstory. Kylo Ren, Rey’s nemesis, was revealed to be Han Solo’s son and Darth Vader’s grandson during The Force Awakens. That went over well with fans considering he was a new character with a familiar feel to the fans loyal to the franchise.
One popular theory that has surfaced mentions Obi-Wan Kenobi as Rey’s father. While this may seem confusing to fans familiar to the mantra of “the Jedi life is a lonely life”, others will be quick to reference Kylo Ren would probably have never been born in the first place if it wasn’t for Anakin’s disobedience to that specific code. In fact, the theory became so popular, Daisy Ridley was asked if Obi Wan was her father:
“We will see in a year, just sit tight on that question.” She coyly replied.
Another popular theory was also debunked by Ridley during the same interview: Is Jyn Erso, protagonist of upcoming spinoff Star Wars: Rogue One, Rey’s mother?
“I mean, I think historically it wouldn’t work, because she is.. Darth Vader is there.. so she would ultimately be my great grandma; no, she would be my grandma. It could happens, especially in a galaxy far, far away.”
Star Wars: Episode VIII is set to release December 2017.
