We all know Robert Downey Jr. as everyone’s favourite genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist and if you’ve been keeping up to date with us then you will surely know by now that Benedict Cumberbatch is entering the MCU as ‘Doctor Stephen Strange’ in just a couple of weeks. But their involvement with the MCU isn’t the only thing they have in common, both RDJ and Cumberbatch have played different incarnations of famous detective ‘Sherlock Holmes’.
RDJ played the Baker Street detective in 2009’s Sherlock Holmes and again in 2011 in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Benedict Cumberbatch on the other hand, brought his incarnation to life on the small screen on the BBC series Sherlock Holmes. Memes flooded the internet when Cumberbatch was announced as ‘Doctor Strange’ and now Marvel studios president, Kevin Feige, has revealed that he couldn’t wait to see the two actors on screen in Avengers: Infinity War…
“We were backstage together at an event, and I don’t know what it was, and it was long before Benedict was officially cast as Doctor Strange — it was something that we were dreaming about at that point. But I remember looking at Robert and Benedict, who of course have both played Sherlock in their highly successful franchises. But I was just sitting there quietly thinking, One day they’re both going to have goatees and be in one of our movies!”
RDJ’s version of ‘Sherlock’ and Cumberbatch’s version of ‘Sherlock’ are very different but they both portray their respective versions brilliantly. Benedict Cumberbatch himself has officially confirmed that we will be seeing ‘Stephen Strange’ in Avengers: Infinity War so we will surely be seeing the two fight side by side. While it’s unlikely that a reference will be made, it’s totally possible that a quick wink to the audience could be included in the script somewhere. RDJ has expressed interest in filming a third Sherlock film so we could be seeing on in 2020 once his current Marvel duties are out the way.
We don’t know what role Strange will play in Infinity War but we know that the eye of Agamotto that Strange wears around his neck houses an infinity stone. In the comics Thanos wanted to gift half the souls in the universe to a character called ‘Death’ to impress her, if Marvel take’s this route then perhaps Thanos could force Strange to open a portal to her. Obviously this is all pure speculation but it would be cool to see Thanos picking up a bloody and beaten ‘Doctor Strange’ by the neck and forcing him to open the portal while the other Avengers look up in fear.
Avengers: Infinity War and it’s currently untitled sequel will be shot back to back over 9 months with filming starting within the next two months. Avengers: Infinity War hits theatres on May 4th 2018 and it’s currently untitled sequel hits theatres on May 3rd 2019.
