Mehcad Brooks To Become Guardian On ‘Supergirl’

After last night’s very comic book accurate episode of Supergirl introduced the Man of Steel himself, the show has decided to change things up. One of the major changes that the show took when it premiered was the changes to the classic character of James “Jimmy” Olsen. In the comics Jimmy is a white, redheaded man who is the happy, slapstick character always getting himself into trouble but also very loyal to both Clark Kent and Superman. The show decided to make him a jacked, African-American heart-throb. While the character still works, it is the upcoming change that has fans’ heads spinning.

According to executive producer Andrew Kreisberg, James Olsen will become Guardian, a vigilante from the comic books and Cartoon Network’s Young Justice. Here is Kreisberg’s official comment.

“James has a pretty big turn coming up. These next few episodes are going to make him realize that being a photographer…is not enough for him, so he’s going to go on a pretty exciting career trajectory that we’re pretty pumped by,”

“James is going to decide that he can no longer sit back and be a sidekick, so he’s going to become a vigilante. He’s going to become Guardian, complete with the shield, which is going to cause a massive problem in his relationship with Kara, because he’s not going to tell her.”

It was also revealed that Winn will be helping him as well, but will be keeping it a secret from Supergirl and the D.E.O.

This decision has confused many fans who are wondering why this change was needed. James Olsen worked fairly well in the show as it was and making him a superhero isn’t the only way to give him a good story arc. This is especially frustrating to fans of Arrow, who were hoping that lead character John Diggle would become this character. Diggle certainly seemed better fit for the role, and it would have worked better than what Arrow and Supergirl are doing now. While I am a bit concerned, I am also intrigued to see where the show takes the character.
