We have seen many incarnations of the Joker on-screen; from Jack Nicholson to Heath Ledger to Jared Leto, each have brought something different to the table. There was almost another name in that roster, which may shock some people. Joe Dante almost took his hand at directing a Batman film and wanted John Lithgow as the Clown Prince of Crime:
“I wanted to hire John Lithgow for that part because I had met him on The Twilight Zone movie. And for whatever reason, I started to gravitate more towards The Joker than towards Batman. And I actually woke up one night and I said to myself, ‘I can’t do this movie—I’m more interested in The Joker than I am in Batman, and that’s not the way it should be. I think I was not the right guy to do the movie.”
Lithgow back in the day might’ve pulled off a decent Joker, but unfortunately we’ll never know. It’s interesting that Dante was interested more in Joker than Batman because with the case of The Dark Knight , a lot of fans were actually cheering for Ledger’s Joker. It would be interesting to see a film produced from that angle, which leaves us wondering what could’ve been.
What do you guys think? Would you have liked to have seen this Batman film? Do you think Lithgow would make a good Joker? Let us know in the comments as well as on our Twitter and Instagram!
