Hollywood seems to thrive off making prequels and reboots these days. The sense of nostalgia among fans and reeling in the new generation not only brings in profit but potentially gets a new franchise set up for sequels down the road. One of the more recent reboots to get their chance in the limelight are the Power Rangers, who are getting their own movie next year. Usually with reboots and sequels, any mention of past movies or events are usually canon at this point as a nod to what others have achieved in the past. One would expect at least one of the old Rangers to show up in the movie in a minor cameo or minor role. According to Walter Jones, the original black Power Ranger, they weren’t even invited to show up onscreen:
While the movie has been rumored to go in depth into the Ranger universe with underlying dark themes, it’s pretty confusing as to why they didn’t try to integrate old elements with the new. Maybe the newfound dark themes are enough reason to separate from other Rangers movies considering they mostly had young children as a target audience. With the older generation patiently waiting for a long awaited dose of the Rangers, the new generation will probably have the final say on how the movie does. The movie is set to release in 2017.
