Rogue One: A Star Wars Story may be coming in the last three weeks of the year, but that doesn’t stop it from being one of the most anticipated films of 2016. We have seen several teasers as well as learned a lot of information about the upcoming anthology film, but tonight we have the first official trailer. Check it out below.
The new trailer shows off almost entirely new footage. It begins with Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) speaking with Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker) who gives us the ominous feel of the Empire as we see TIE Fighters and Imperial Star Destroyers on multiple systems throughout the galaxy. The next twenty seconds or so show us new footage with the same dialogue we already have heard about the mission and the Death Star. We then learn that the story begins with Captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and Jyn going out on their own to recruit the team to steal the Death Star plans. We then see the two recruit Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen) as well as his partner Chirrut Îmwe (Donnie Yen). The scene cuts to Chirrut, Cassian Andor, and Jyn fighting Stormtroopers and Chirrut seems to call upon the Force, but in a very different way than the Jedi have used it. He appears to be a servant of the Force, not a user of the Force.
We then meet K-2SO (Alan Tudyk) who cracks a joke and we begin to see some of the humor in the trailer and the film. We then see the Death Star in full view, blocking the sun of an unknown planet. Also we get to see Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) overlooking the Death Star and surrounded by what appears to be high level Imperial Officers.
Next, the war movie begins. We see more footage of the beach battle and some very dirty rebel troopers fighting with X-Wings above them. We then see K-2SO making a very C-3PO-like joke about percentages and then some more action shots. We also get a quick look at Riz Ahmed’s character Bodhi Rook. The next scenes are very thrilling, showing X-Wings flying low on a dark planet and Baze Malbus firing a rocket as an AT-ACT on the beach. We then see a great shot of the crew flying away into hyperspace from what appears to be a exploding planet, possibly caused by the Death Star. We then see Jyn on a sky platform limping towards an approaching TIE Fighter, showing she has no fear whatsoever. Finally we see the crew ready for battle and Jyn leading the way inside what we can only guess is a U-Wing. After the logo appears we see one final shot, the one we’ve waited for…of Darth Vader. We only get to see the back of his helmet and hear him breathe but it’s enough to make every Star Wars fan get super hyped.
Overall the trailer was phenomenal and I believe stops any claims that the film was in trouble because from the looks of it this movie is in great condition. What do you think of the trailer? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter and Instagram!
