Just a few weeks ago, Tom Holland made his on-screen debut as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, and he also already has a solo film scheduled for a 2017 release, which is expected to begin production this summer.
So far, the only characters besides Holland himself we have confirmation for are Marisa Tomei as Aunt May and Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man. Additional cast members in yet to be confirmed roles are Zendaya (Frenemies), Laura Harrier (The Last Five Years) and Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel).
Michael Keaton was rumored to be playing the film’s villain, which turned out not to be true. However, there’s a rumor (and it’s a very big rumor – this is highly, highly unlikely) that Vincent D’Onofrio will reprise his role as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin from Marvel’s Daredevil. This comes from ScreenGeek, who claims to have information from an anonymous source.
Now, there are two reasons why this is so unlikely, the main one being that Disney would have to figure out a deal with Netflix before filming starts. Secondly, the character Wilson Fisk is, as of right now, not in an ideal place to be Spider-Man’s villain; he’s in prison. And unless the upcoming Netflix shows Luke Cage or Iron Fist see Fisk breaking out, that’s exactly where he’ll be when Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters. However, D’Onofrio’s performance as the Kingpin was very positively received by fans and the character certainly is compelling, so this would be neat to see.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is scheduled to release July 7, 2017.
