Suicide Squad star Margot Robbie plays one of DC’s most well-known characters in Harley Quinn, whose famous red and black jester outfit is easily recognizable by all comic book fans. However, Harley Quinn’s first live-action appearance will not feature her famous clothing, and instead Robbie will wear a more modernized outfit to fit with director David Ayer’s innovative vision for the film. This modernization of the character’s outfit is similar to that of the Joker in Suicide Squad, in which Jared Leto’s appearance and outfit will be much different and more modern than those previously seen.
Although Margot Robbie first rose to fame after her breakout role in Wolf of Wall Street, in which she went fully nude, she still struggled to wear Harley Quinn’s provocative and revealing clothing. Robbie spoke on the matter, saying:
“As Margot, no, I don’t like wearing that. I’m eating burgers at lunchtime, and then you go do a scene where you’re hosed down and soaking wet in a white T-shirt, it’s so clingy and you’re self-conscious about it.”
Robbie even spoke to David Ayer in regards to Harley Quinn’s clothing, saying she was not comfortable with it. Unfortunately, Ayer told her it was necessary for the character’s iconography, so she agreed to follow his direction. Ayer believed the denim overalls would not be fitting with this version of the character in his film as it would be too modest for a character as unpredictable as Harley Quinn.
Robbie continued on in regards to Harley Quinn’s outfit, mentioning she isn’t wearing “hot pants” in the sequel. Could this lead to her wearing the famous jester outfit?
Suicide Squad is set to premiere in theaters on August 5th.
