In an exclusive announcement, Marvel has revealed three chracter names for their upcoming 2017 sequel, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2’. While the cast was mostly revealed during their initial announcement at the start of production, these three characters were not included. First up on the list is Elizabeth Debicki, who was revealed to be playing Ayesha. This is an interesting reveal due to her massive origin story in Marvel Comics. Originally born as Paragon, Ayesha came from the same race ‘Adam Warlock’ came from. The two creations lashed against their scientific creators and escaped into the bowels of space to re-appear in later comics. She’s also had a couple of appearances with Dr. Strange and has even held the mantle of Captain Marvel previously. While these may not be adapted to the silver screen, it’s interesting what James Gunn (director of ‘GOTG:V2) could do with her character due to her various appearances in the comics. Next up on the list is Tommy Flanagan, playing Tullk Ul-Zayn. In the comics, Tullk was revealed to be one of Ronan the Accuser’s henchmen. This is definitely an interesting reveal since Ronan is believed to be dead in the MCU (or not, no one ever knows with Marvel). It was later revealed that Tullk will be working for Yondu and the Ravagers in the sequel. Chris Sullivan was revealed to be playing Tsarface and has no comic origins so credit goes to Marvel Studios on what they could do with that character. It’s interesting that Kurt Russell’s role hasn’t been revealed yet and if the rumors are true, there’s a good possibility we won’t know who he’s playing until the movie itself gets released. Rumor says that he’s slated to play Star-Lord’s father (Star-Lord is played by Chris Pratt in the movies).
Directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2 stars Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Bradley Cooper (Rocket Raccoon), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Sean Gunn (Kraglin), with Pom Klementieff (Mantis), and Michael Rooker (Yondu) and potentially Kurt Russell. And with filming February 11, in Atlanta, Georgia, Volume 2 is set for release on May 5, 2017.
