Ben Affleck On Alejandro G. Inarritu’s Comment On Superhero Movies

In 2014, The Revenant director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu was quoted saying that “[Superhero movies] have been poison, this cultural genocide”. Batman actor Ben Affleck disagreed with this statement at a Mexico City news conference:

“I know Alejandro and he’s a great guy and a brilliant filmmaker and I admire him enormously. And El Chivo (Mexican cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki) is a friend of mine. Alejandro is also given to over-statement. I wouldn’t call it cultural genocide, but he’s brilliant and his point is taken that you can’t just swallow up cinema with any kind of movie.”

When asked about a rumor that Affleck was rewriting the Batman v Superman script in his Batsuit while on set, the actor replied:

“That is the dumbest rumor. I just like how if I was gonna go write, I would put on this bat suit first because it’s so comfortable to write in. I didn’t rewrite anything in any outfit, my underwear or otherwise.”

Aside from Affleck, BvS director Zack Synder also took questions, as well as Henry Cavill (Superman) and Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman). Snyder revealed that he was actually considering Jesse Eisenberg, who will be portraying Lex Luthor, for a different role at first, but that changed when they first personally met.

“He’s got this amazing way about him and you can never tell whether he’s being self-deprecating or whether he’s insulting you, and I mean that as a compliment,” Snyder laughingly said. “I thought he offered really amazing possibilities for Lex.”

Experience for yourself what he meant next week! Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters on Thursday, March 24.
